Over 100 DWI Arrests in Missouri During Labor Day Weekend

Law enforcement agencies throughout Missouri had their work cut out for them this past Labor Day weekend – one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. The holiday weekend – as with many other holidays throughout the year – is also notorious for high rates of arrests, accidents, injuries, and fatalities relating to driving while intoxicated (DWI) and driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs.

As impaired driving has become such a huge concern during the holidays, law enforcement agencies across the state ramped up efforts to arrest motorists who made the decision to drive while intoxicated. This year, the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign – as well as other campaigns in jurisdictions throughout Missouri – began as early as August 16 and ran through the Labor Day Holiday, ending on Monday, September 2 just before midnight.

As part of these heightened efforts law enforcement officers participated in statewide DWI checkpoints and saturation patrols. Putting more officers to work over the weekend was designed to enforce Missouri DWI laws and keep public roads, highways, and even lakes safe. The results speak for themselves, as statistics from the Missouri Highway Patrol reveal. During Labor Day weekend, troopers reported the following:

  • 250 accidents were investigated
  • 7 traffic fatalities
  • 119 DWI arrests
  • 14 boating while intoxicated arrests
  • 9 injured in boating accidents

DWI Penalties in Missouri

Increased DWI patrols and law enforcement efforts conducted over Labor Day weekend show that the state of Missouri places an emphasis on enforcing DWI laws. Not only are officers on the roads and highways constantly on the lookout for impaired drivers, but local prosecutors and judges are also focused on convicting and punishing those who drive drunk or under the influence of drugs.

In Missouri, a standard first DWI can result in severe short- and long-term penalties, including large fines and on-going expenses, possible terms of imprisonment, and court ordered classes, among others. If an individual has previously been convicted of a DWI or related offense – or if they are charged with a more serious DWI, including those involving accidents, injuries, or child passengers – these penalties can be greatly intensified.

Regardless of the particular circumstances involved in a case, anyone who stands accused of a DWI in Missouri should be focused on working with experienced St. Louis DWI attorneys from The Hammer Law Firm, LLC.
