Missouri Town Protests Over Teen Rape Case
One of the largest stories sweeping Missouri – and the entire nation – concerns a controversial alleged rape involving two teens in Maryville, Missouri, a town of roughly 12,000 residents. The case stems from an alleged sexual assault that occurred in 2012, when a then 14-year-old girl reported that she was raped by a then 17-year-old classmate.
The biggest controversy began when a Nodaway County prosecutor ultimately dropped felony charges against the alleged assailant and another teen who allegedly recorded the assault on a cellphone. Since the charges were dropped, public outcry immediately began. The victim's family, advocates, and supporters eventually sparked a media sensation that has spread throughout the nation.
What began as an online protest eventually evolved into a large demonstration on Tuesday night. The "Justice for Daisy" demonstration drew hundreds of supporters and national media attention. In response to the protests, attention, and demonstrations, officials announced that a new special prosecutor had been appointed to the case. The prosecutor will be reviewing the case in order to determine if charges should be pursued.
Subjectivity aside, this case serves to highlight just how strongly Americans feel about sexual assault, sexual violence, and sex crimes in general. Opinions are difficult to make, especially when little about the case is truly known, but thousands of people across the nation have already "chosen sides" – many in support of the alleged victim.
While The Hammer Law Firm, LLC supports victims and hopes that this case is resolved, we also value the importance of reaching a resolution through the Missouri criminal justice system. If anything is clear, it is that sentiment, opinions, and scrutiny surrounding sex crime cases are profound. While not every accused individual faces sex crime charges that affect the national landscape, many face harsh judgment, even before they have had their day in court.
At The Hammer Law Firm, LLC, we know that this is one of the largest obstacles and burdens defendants face during the criminal process, and we work zealously to preserve the rights of clients from the very first moment they contact our firm.
