Missouri Law Enforcement Steps Up Holiday DWI Patrols

|

As part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Thanksgiving and Christmas push for safety, holiday DWI campaigns are now underway throughout Missouri. From now through the end of the year, law enforcement will be increasing officer presence on Missouri roadways, setting up sobriety checkpoints aimed at identifying and detaining suspected drunk drivers. While DWI arrests have dropped in recent years, law enforcement is remaining vigilant and will spare no effort to arrest anyone whom they suspect to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Unfortunately, none of the methods police officers use to determine whether a person is intoxicated are infallible, and it is not uncommon for drivers who are within the legal limit to be charged with DWI. Field sobriety tests have no scientific merit and are highly subjective. Breath testing machines are only as good as the maintenance put into them, which is many times not performed on a routine basis. Blood test samples can easily become contaminated, as can urine tests, which are not even an accurate representation of the amount of alcohol in a person’s system at the time they were driving. Because there are so many elements that can work against an accused person, it is important to retain qualified legal counsel to defend against DWI charges.
