Veterans Court in St. Louis

|

Creating programs and services that support our nation's veterans has long been a subject of concern throughout Missouri and the nation. For many years, our country has struggled with providing the right type of help to the many military men and women who have difficulty coping with civilian life after serving our country. As revealed through years of statistics, far too many veterans turn to drugs and alcohol in an attempt to deal with the stress and strain of combat. As it so often does for all types of people, substance abuse has led a number of our veterans into the criminal justice system.

To directly confront this issue, the St. Louis City Circuit Court has partnered with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to create the Veterans Treatment Court. The Veterans Court offers various services, treatment, and mentorship from the VA to veterans who have been arrested for certain offenses – commonly drug possession. The purpose of the court is to keep nonviolent offenders out of jail and on the road to recovery.
