In the wake of a sex crime "epidemic," authorities fear that
students will become complacent to the gravity of such claims.
When one college senior heard about an alleged rape inside a campus dorm,
he described himself as "not surprised." Why? These types of
incidents are common on college campuses and, whether the accusations
are true or false, they leave students jaded to the serious nature of
sex crimes in the United States.
One student, who served as an RA on campus for several years said, "I
mean, it's devastating, obviously, but I think I'm almost desensitized
to that kind of stuff right now."
This is the kind of attitude that experts fear; an attitude that understands
the devastation of these offenses but is not shocked to regularly hear
sex crime accusation son a college campus. In the last five years, the
small campus has seen at least 20 accusations of rape and sexual assault.
A current investigation is searching for two men who allegedly raped a
student in November.
