Knockout Game, Assaults in St. Louis Go Viral

News of the "Knockout Game" has been sweeping the nation as of late. A "game" in which individuals – often one or several young teens in a group – physically attack strangers in hopes of knocking them out with one blow, the Knockout Game has quickly become a national headline. Throughout the country, many have been fascinated by the sheer violence of the game.

In addition to the violence, part of what has made the Knockout Game such a media sensation is that it is also an internet sensation. Videos of attacks have been posted online, many of them brutal and explicitly violent. Among the many videos and reports of assaults, several have involved elderly victims and women. The latest Knockout Game victim – a 76-year-old woman – was attacked from behind this past weekend in Brooklyn. She is believed to be the 10th Knockout Game victim in New York City.

The Knockout Game is certainly violent and is most definitely a senseless crime. Since more videos and stories have been trending online, reports of attacks have increased. Already, the Knockout Game has been reported in various states throughout the nation, and has claimed lives in Syracuse, New Jersey, and St. Louis.

Because these are criminal acts and because of the Knockout Game's high publicity, law enforcement agencies throughout the country and St. Louis are stepping up to make it clear that these acts will not be tolerated. In many cases, prosecutors are pushing for additional charges and the maximum penalties possible. While law enforcement is pushing to penalize offenders, others are searching for ways to prevent these acts of violence. Since most cases involve teens and juveniles, many jurisdictions are considering new ways to educate youth about senseless violence, as well as to provide better opportunities and services for at-risk teens.
